Civil Engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physically built structures like roads, bridges, dams, canals and buildings. It is the second oldest engineering skill after military engineering. It is the application of physical and scientific principles of solving problems of society. Its history is linked to knowledge of structure, material science, geology, soil hydrology, environment mechanics and other fields. It contains several sub-divisions like architectural engineering, control engineering, structural engineering, construction, surveying and foundation engineering.

Civil engineering finds its application in the public sector from municipal sectors to the national government and in the private sector from individual homes to international companies.
